Craighead County Braces for 70 MPH Winds: Prepare Your Home Now
Last updated: September 24, 2026
Residents of Craighead County are being advised to prepare for significant weather as a Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued, with forecasts indicating winds could reach up to 70 miles per hour. This level of wind can cause considerable damage, making proactive measures essential for homeowners. The immediate priority is securing any outdoor items that could become projectiles. Lawn furniture, trampolines, garbage cans, and hanging plants should all be brought inside or firmly secured. Even small, loose objects can become dangerous hazards when whipped around by such strong gusts. Beyond securing loose items, homeowners should also inspect their property for any potential vulnerabilities. This includes checking for loose shingles on the roof, ensuring gutters are clear to prevent water backup, and securing any sheds or outbuildings that may not be structurally sound enough to withstand high winds. For those with trees close to their homes, it's wise to assess their condition. Removing any dead or weak branches now can prevent them from falling and causing damage to your house during the storm. While you can't control the weather, you can control the preparation. It's also a good time to review your homeowner's insurance policy to understand your coverage in the event of storm damage. Knowing your policy details beforehand can streamline the claims process if the worst occurs. Staying informed is key. Keep an eye on local weather updates and heed any evacuation orders if they are issued. Having a plan for where to shelter during the storm, preferably in an interior room away from windows, is also a critical safety step. For those in and around Indianapolis, Indiana, if you're concerned about your home's readiness for severe weather, arranging for a free roof inspection can offer peace of mind. It's a practical step to identify any potential issues before they become problems.
